Economist, Dr. Davidson Dawey, says Jamaica has been mistaken in relying so heavily on tourism to improve the country’s economic fortunes.
He says tourism, in particular the all-inclusive hotel concept, has not served Jamaica well.
He says though tourism is marketed as the country’s number one product, it has not brought the desired economic benefits to Jamaica.
According to Dr. Dawey most of the earnings in the sector do not remain in the country.
Dr. Dawey says many of the small industries linked to tourism, such as the craft industry, have been suffering as a result of the all-inclusive concept as tourists are not leaving hotel properties as much as before.
In the meantime, the economist says too many incentives are being given to hotel owners.
Dr. Dawey says those incentives should be redirected to productive sectors such as manufacturing.
