Big Spend On Bushing

THE FORMER Andrew Holness administration has reportedly spent US$20.8 million (J$1.8 billion) in less than 30 days to carry out 'bushing' works in December.
"There is nothing inherently wrong with bushing but the commitment to spend J$1.8 billion on bushing in one month is worthy of note," Transport, Works and Housing Minister Dr Omar Davies told the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
The Jamaica Labour Party had come out strongly against the current administration's Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP) describing it as a 'crash programme' exercise similar to the one carried out by the Michael Manley government of the 1970s.
"It certainly raises questions about the sincerity of those who now seek to criticise labour-intensive activities under JEEP," Davies declared in Parliament during a statement on the US$400-million Jamaica Development Infrastruc-ture Programme.
"Furthermore, it is almost unbelievable to realise that while it was found possible to commit J$1.8 billion in this manner, funds were not available to carry out urgently needed repairs to two bridges over the Rio Minho," Davies added.
The transport and works minister said he had subsequently given instructions that the bridges be repaired.
