Police Commissioner Owen Ellington says the Shower Posse Gang which was led by extradited crime lord Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke is still a problem for the constabulary.
He was speaking this morning at a special press briefing to address the issue of crime.
“Western Kingston is still an area of influence for the gang,” Commissioner Ellington said, adding that the gang was also operating outside of Coke’s former enclave.
However, the chief constable said the gang has been significantly weakened.
Coke, who is now in the United States on weapons and racketeering charges, is to be sentenced later this month.
This morning the National Security Minister Peter Bunting who hosted the briefing was asked whether there was fear that there could be any violent flare up or other impact after Coke’s sentencing.
Bunting said he is positive that the commissioner would undertake the necessary risk assessment and make the preparations where necessary.
In May 2010, an operation by the security forces in Tivoli Gardens to arrest Coke resulted in the killing of 73 people.
