Minister of National Security Peter Bunting says the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s drive to reduce crime to levels comparable to developed countries, could have a significant impact on the growth prospects of the country.

Bunting said executives from the Planning Institute of Jamaica, told the Cabinet Retreat on the weekend that the major impediments of growth in Jamaica were crime and corruption.

He was speaking this morning at the opening ceremony, for the destruction of small arms and light weapons at the Police Armoury on Ellettson Road in Kingston.

At least 1,248 firearms retrieved by the JCF and 655 from the Firearm Licensing Authorities will be destroyed at the Caribbean Cement Company in Kingston today.

no lazie... that is just assinine... he should be saying in the affirmative, crime has stunted growth and he intends to do 'x, y and z' to reduce crime to the lowest in the region to encourage growth opportunities... that is what i would have preferred to hear from the security minister...

An effective strategy to reduce crime would be a start. Organized gangs & their criminal networks should be public enemy #1.

Yaaard MUST seriously address the root-cause in crime...if reduction is the objective.

Imagine persecuting organized gangs and their criminal network...only to be replaced by upcoming youths.

Education, and job creation is an important part of the solution. Sadly these two elements are always left of of crime reduction effort.

Skirting the real issue

Crime and corruption are mere symptoms of the underlying problem... AKA the OUTCOMES

The root problems are Political Tribalism and Brown Man Time Class Warfare... which result in fractured & war-like communities, deeply divided people and woeful under-investment in education.. ie Extremely negative Social Capital.

A lasting "Anti-Crime Plan" starts and ends with addressing those phenomena
