  • Madman beaten for taking off child's panty

    PAULA GORDON, Staff Reporter

A shovel, a broken light pole and pieces of lumber were among the things several men from a St Andrew community used to beat a middle-aged man on Sunday after he allegedly removed the underwear of a five-year-old girl.

Information reaching THE STAR is that about 10 a.m., the man who many in the community believe to be of unsound mind, went to pick grapefruits in the yard where the child and her mother live.

It is alleged that he saw the child playing in the yard, called her and pulled down her underwear.

The child reportedly ran after assuming that he was going to assault her.

A family member told THE STAR that, "She run go tell har sister and when she come out a look fi him, him gone."

THE STAR understands that a manhunt was subsequently launched, and about 5 p.m., the alleged culprit was held.

According to an eyewitness, "Mi say dem beat him fi bout half hour. Then dem tie him up wid one rope and fling him ina one van back and carry him round a station."

When contacted, the St Andrew North police confirmed that the man had been arrested and charged.

According to the police, he was granted bail on Monday and is scheduled to appear in court on a sexual offence charge.

Interestingly, THE STAR has learnt that the accused man has served time in prison for raping an underage boy in the same community.
