  • Rameish Simpson freed after witness disappears

    Barbara Gayle, Staff Reporter

Thirty-four-year-old Rameish Simpson, of White Horses, St Thomas was today freed of shooting charges after the prosecution offered no further evidence against him.

Simpson was the man who was allegedly rescued from the police by Member of Parliament James Robertson in January 2009 and taken to hospital.

The complainant had reported to the police that in July 2009, Simpson shot and wounded him while he was in St Thomas.

But today the prosecution reported that the complainant has walked off the Witness Protection Programme and cannot be found.

Rameish Simpson who was represented by attorneys Tom Tavares Finson and Christian Tavares Finson was then freed today of charges of shooting with intent and wounding with intent.

Simpson was first brought before the Gun Court in relation to the charges in February 2010.

The case was set for trial on several occasions but the complainant failed to attend court.

Simpson's lawyers applied for the case to be dismissed for want of prosecution and the application was granted on January 21 last year.

The police applied through the Director of Public Prosecutions to have the case relisted before the Gun Court.

At the time, the police said that the complainant was willing to testify and was put under the Witness Protection Programme.

Simpson was re-arrested and taken before the court in July 2011.

Simpson's trial began on January 9 and two police witnesses testified.

The case was set for continuation today for the complainant to testify.
