    Eight-year low for murders

    Published: Tuesday | January 17, 2012

    Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator
For the first time in eight years Jamaica's recorded murder rate has dipped below the 1,200 mark, with 1,124 people killed last year.
However things got off to a rocky start for the police in 2012, with 51 murders recorded in the 17 days since the start of the new year.
"At the beginning of the year we were about five murders per day. Now we are down to two murders per day," a senior investigator told The Gleaner yesterday.

For a country with a population of under 3 M that is not a rocky start?.

I suppose the "rocky start" was referring to the initial trend of 5 murders a day for the first few days.

Murders low, but the carnage on the roads continue. St. Catherine alone have about 8 since the year start, which includes a family of 4.

Yep. Always the same process. A knucklehead trying to overtake a line of traffic and runs into an oncoming truck.

I always heard that Jamaicans are the best drivers in the world. I guess another in the long line of ego stroking first, biggest, longest etc etc.

Jamaican drivers cant even come close to the drivers that I have seen in Matropolitaln Manila. In terms of level of skill. They drive faster, on narrower roads, and have much more traffic and far fewer fatalities. Its amazing.

A vehicular accident along the Highway 2000 toll road in St Catherine has resulted in the death of two persons, identified as Beresford Morgan and Davian Catterwood.
Reports are that about 1:15 p.m., an Isuzu truck was travelling westerly along the corridor. Upon reaching a section near the Vineyards Toll Plaza, Catterwood reportedly lost control of the truck and crashed into Morgan’s truck (also an Isuzu) which was parked on the soft shoulder.

Police reports are that Morgan was in the process of changing a punctured tyre when he was hit.

While both drivers died on the spot, three injured passengers were taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where they have been admitted.

The deaths have taken the St Catherine North Division road fatalities to six since the start of the year. Investigations are being undertaken by the St Catherine North Traffic Department.
