During the election they spent a lot of money hyping their slate of women and Anjuh even said he appointed Shahine because she was female...and now this...sigh...

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) yesterday described Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller's decision to appoint three other women to the Cabinet as 'jobs for the girls'.

Simpson Miller on Friday unveiled a 28-member executive consisting of 20 Cabinet ministers and eight state ministers.

In defending the size of the executive, the prime minister had said: "If you check my (Cabinet) size and the number of people that won the elections for the PNP, it is quite different from that of Mr (Bruce) Golding."

But in a release to the media yesterday, the former minister of information in the JLP government, Arthur Williams, said "the only interpretation of this statement is that because of her large numbers, the prime minister has to find a job for the girls and the cousins".

Williams added: "What extravagance it is to have a minister without portfolio being responsible for information solely, a minister without portfolio being responsible for sports solely, and a minister being responsible for youth and culture solely."

The JLP said Simpson Miller's 20-member Cabinet "would be amusing were it not so absolutely unnecessary and a waste of the country's scarce resources".

Simpson Miller's executive includes five women and two persons who are her cousins.

Senator Sandrea Falconer has been appointed minister without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for information.

Simpson Miller's cousin, Natalie Neita-Headley, is a minister without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for sports.

Lisa Hanna has been appointed minister of youth and culture, while first-time MP Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams is the junior minister in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce.

    No place for daley

Denise Daley is the only woman elected on the People's National Party ticket who has not been given a place in the executive by Simpson Miller.

Noel Arscott, another cousin of Simpson Miller, is the minister of local government and community development.

In the meantime, the People's National Party (PNP) Women's Movement is commending Simpson Miller for increasing the representation of women in top government positions.

"For the first time in Jamaica's history, four women have been given ministerial positions in any one Cabinet," said Jennifer Edwards, the organisation's president.

Edwards said she has every confidence that the women "will continue to chart the course for the upliftment and advancement of women in Jamaica, while they make meaningful contributions in the areas to which they are assigned."

Former Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who succeeded Golding late last year, has said that he considered the matter of demographics when he appointed Shahine Robinson a Cabinet minister in October.

I heard (or read) that the PM inauguration was over 1 hour late. An indication that time is not of the essence in getting things done in Jamaica. (Not that it has been).

The inauguration (to me) would be a FIRST SIMPLE way to show that the 'new' government meant change.

Another thing; the government appears bigger. This is the recipe for duplication of efforts...inefficiency.

Look for Jamaica to maintain it's current standing in the corruption index.

well HL (another wandering sheep) the people have spoken. Let me see Nanny P's response. If you are using the ceremony as bench mark then speak about P's act on the cutting of costs.

The 19 ministers and eight state ministers were sworn in this afternoon during a ceremony that started one-hour and 19 minutes late.

True the function was over an hour late to start but it was the GG I heard who was late not the politicians.

But what did that have to do with my post HL, just axing...

So the swearing in of the ministers started 1:19 minutes late and somehow they stopped time so that Portia's Inauguration would occur at the scheduled time?
