Jamaica College Choir Continues Fine-Tuning

Second concert ahead of Trinidad tour on for tomorrow
TOMORROW EVENING at the Saxthorpe Methodist Church, something special will be happening.
The Jamaica College (JC) Chapel Choir is headed to Trinidad for a six-day performance tour, scheduled for March 28 through April, and as part of its preparation is giving the second in a two-part series of concerts. 'The JC Chapel Choir presents excerpts from Vivaldi's 'Gloria' was first shown late last year and from all reports, it was special. The point of preparing for anything is so as to ensure that you are at your best when those preparations are complete. If the process is going well, then the second staging of excerpts from Gloria should provide even better entertainment than did the first. There is the possibility of one or two more concerts before the choir leaves for overseas duty.
The JC Chapel Choir was formed in September of 1981 and has participated across the island at sung Eucharists, performing the Mass, anthems and hymns.
repertoire
The choir's repertoire spans Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Pergolesi, Britten and several others. Contemporary gospel and negro spiritual compositions - including those of Jamaicans, Noel Dexter and Olive Lewin - are performed as well. The 23-member choir comprises students and old boys; bass and tenors performing in different languages such as French, Spanish, German, Latin and, of course, English. The JC Chapel Choir is one of only three choirs in the Caribbean holding membership in the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), based in England.
In March of 2012, the choir will be sitting the prestigious Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examinations in an attempt to gain membership to that organisation. Only two other choirs in the island are members of the prestigious ABRSM which is based in England; the Kingston College Chapel Choir and the Immaculate Conception High School Choir.
Tomorrow's event, which begins at 5 p.m., will, like last year's staging, feature the accompaniment of Audley Davidson and Livingston Burnett. There will also be special guest soloists Carole Reid and Carl Bliss, and Randall Campbell with baton.
