Pricey Cabinet - Close To $200m Per Annum In Salaries, Allowances

pauperized country with so much poverty - whey yuh HL, excessive bureaucracy

    Tyrone Reid, Senior Staff Reporter
Flip-flopping on her previous position on big government while she was in Opposition, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has named a 28-member executive that will cost taxpayers close to $200 million per annum, at current rates, in salaries and allowances.

According to data gleaned from a Gordon House document detailing the salaries, allowances, and reimbursable expenses payable to members of parliament (MPs) and the political directorate, the 20 members of the Cabinet will pocket $134.5 million per annum while the eight ministers of state will collectively bank $47.01 million.

When the salaries and allowances payable to the slate of junior ministers are added to what is being paid to the members of the Cabinet, the total executive pay package balloons to $181.5 million. This does not include the salary of the attorney general, a post previously tied to that of the minister of justice.

After naming her 18-member shadow Cabinet in May last year, Simpson Miller said if she were in government, the number would not be that high.

"I did not announce an 18-member Cabinet. I'm not the Government," she said when asked if that would be the size of her Cabinet.

They dont have a clue ,why not call on the business community for the position of minister of finanace, same for the minister of trade ,exclude MPs.We need expertise in these areas.

Cut the cabinet to half that. The essential positions that they need are.

    Agriculture
    Transportation
    Education
    Health
    Security
    Sports
    Tourism
    Finance
    Trade
    Culture-Enviroment

200m for what, none of them have a clue ,nothing dynamic.

Any other job you would have to produce a Resume and three references. Let me see now, the up keep of a big name brand SUV does not take non-name brand parts, time to get out the calculator 200m divided by ? = What?.

The Minister of Finance has to be an elected MP.

As for the others, you have would have to be appointed senator. Bruce tried it with Wehby from Grace, I don't think it was wildly successful. PNP has tried in the past as well with people like Danny Williams.

Looking to the private sector for advisors or even representatives makes sense but never assume that someone successful in business would make a successful minister of govt. The paramterers you are working with are TOTALLY different.

.. one quick note .... with Portia getting 7.2M, then PJ and Seaga also gets 7.2M as pension.

Agreed...but why the nearly doubling of PM salary and MOF?

I hope the gleaner's numbers are incorrect, or something is missing, because there is no reason that Portia's salary should be double what Bruce's salary was given that it is time for the country to be tightening. The absolute values are nothing extraordinary, especially if the ministers were performing. But the huge increases can't be justified.
