    UPDATE: Tufton loses his seat
    2011-12-31 21:17:01 | (0 Comments)

    Daraine Luton, Senior Gleaner Writer

The Director of Elections Orrette Fisher has confirmed that the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Hugh Buchanan has triumphed over the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Dr Christopher Tufton in the race to be Member of Parliament for South West St Elizabeth.

“When I checked with the returning officer he told me that the position was reversed by the official count,” Fisher told The Gleaner.

Buchanan, son of the late Donald Buchanan, won the seat by 13 votes on the official count.

Tufton, a deputy leader of the JLP, appeared to have won the seat by 101 votes on the preliminary count polling 9,426 to Buchanan’s 9,325.

In the event that the result stands the PNP would move to 42 seats in the House of Representatives and the JLP 21.

Tufton, who had won the seat by 1,825 votes in 2007 would also join Robert Montague (Western St Mary) and Clive Mullings (West Central St James) as government ministers to have lost their seats.

"We are truly excited and ecstatic about the win and it is good to join the other seats that have been declared for the People's National Party," Buchanan said.

"We have pledged good representation and I look forward to delivering that as the Member of Parliament," he continued.

Donald Buchanan had served as South West St Elizabeth MP from 1989 to 2007.

In his last election in 2002, Donald Buchanan won the seat by 117 votes.

This evening Hugh Buchanan lauded his late father for teaching him the virtue of hard work.

"I know that he is proud of me where ever he is."

Donald Buchanan died earlier this year.

South West St Elizabeth has always voted for the party which wins the general election.
THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

      Too bad!

I saw Buchanan on TV a week before the election and he sounded intelligent and energetic. I wish him luck!

How can a man who was touted as party leader and possible PM lose his seat? Can you imagine though...13 votes????? That's like one yard....one family...politics rough...

Really rough, because I had seen this gentleman as a potential PM. The people of his constituency must know more abot him than I do.

I also get the gut feeling, and I have no evidence to support this, that Tufton would rather be out of representative politics completely, than simply being an MP on the opposition side. He gives me the impression that he is an good administartor with a lot of good ideas, rather than being a politician. If Portia wants to pull off an unprecedented coup, she could appoint him to the position of MOA. That would send a strong message to the Jamaica people and the rest of the world, that we have matured and our government is ready to serve in the best interest of the country, and not just the narrow interest of the party. That, in my mind would be seachange in Jamaican politics and governance.

            Is it consitutionally possible?

I would welcome such a move. I have long felt that the opposition is too important in Jamaican political life. We need to focus on Jamaica and stop giving our support to opposition parties when there is no election.

Wont happen and shouldn't happen. While he may be a good administrator and have good ideas he should serve from the opposition side...furthermore, he was rejected by the electorate - wouldn't that be a slap in the face for the victors and constituents?

I understand that sentiment, but 13 votes don't represent a slap or true mandate to this observer.

Interesting idea... that's change I could believe in...

which is why it would never happen...even in the unlikely event both Portia and he were open to it

Who occupies a ministry does not and should not have anything to do with the popularity contest of elections .... it's about competence...But there would be a huge trust or rather lack of trust factor with "Outsiders" in a cabinet

Senators can be appointed as ministers and that restriction should be broadened. The pool of competent MPs & Senators is far too limited imho
