  • PNP clarifies buggery law statement

The People’s National Party (PNP) is this afternoon clarifying comments made by party President Portia Simpson-Miller on a review of the Buggery Act.

During Tuesday’s leadership debate Simpson-Miller said she had no problem with appointing gay individuals to her Cabinet.

She further said she believed it is time that the law is reviewed and the matter discussed in Parliament.

Since then, there has been much public outcry with church leaders expressing concern that a PNP Administration under Simpson-Miller’s leadership would repeal the Act.

However, in a statement this afternoon the PNP said the party president gave no such commitment.

The party further reiterated that Simpson-Miller is of the view that the Buggery Act should be brought to the House of Representative where after consulting with their constituents all MPs should vote based on their conscience.

And the PNP says Simpson-Miller stands by her pledge to make appointments to a Cabinet led by her on the basis of competence and ability.
