  • Five hundred children remain missing since Jan!!!!!!!

A breakdown of figures of children, who have been reported missing since the start of the year, has led to an astonishing revelation.

More than 500 of them are still unaccounted for.

The figures are from the National Bureau of Investigation and the Children's lobby group, Hear the Children's Cry, revealed the breakdown of missing children in a table submitted with a release Tuesday morning [December 20].

The National Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that the figures were sourced from that agency, but stressed they are indicative as they still await final confirmations from police divisions.

The figures show that from January 1 to November 13, 1,808 were reported missing and of these, 1,278 are known to have returned home while four were confirmed to have died.

Of the 526 children still missing, 421 are girls while 105 are boys and of the boys, 17 are under 11 years old and 88 are between 12 and 17 years old.

Of the missing girls three are under 11 years old and 418 are between 12 and 17.

A breakdown of months where most of the children went missing shows June accounting for 168 females followed by October with 152.

In the male category, May and July accounted for 53, respectively.

Next in line was March which suggested that 45 were reported missing.

Some run away and will come back home. Others maybe involved in human trafficking as they just caught someone the other day who was using fake paper to get kids abroad. I don't think it is an isolated incident.

Do we really search for these kids when they runaway?

Children's Lobby Calls For Stop Orders At Ports Across Islan

Children's lobby Hear The Children's Cry is calling for the immediate introduction of stop orders for missing children at all of the island's ports of entry.

The call follows last week's arrest of a woman allegedly involved in the trafficking of large numbers of Jamaican children.

On Monday, 54-year-old Hyacinth Dryden was remanded until January 3 when she appeared in court to answer to charges of forgery and uttering forged documents.

Statistics released by Hear the Children's Cry have revealed that more than 500 children, who were reported missing since the start of this year, are still unaccounted for.

The figures released yesterday by the children's lobby were reportedly sourced from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

          Majority return home

Nigel Cooper, University of Technology lecturer and volunteer consultant with Hear the Children's Cry, said although the majority of missing children returned home, a significant number are never heard from again.

"We have repeatedly raised the concern that Jamaican children could be at risk from human traffickers," Cooper said. "Although the majority of our missing children return home, a significant number who go missing are never heard from again."

He added: "Our fears have now been concretised - the arrest a few days ago of a woman on suspicion of trafficking Jamaican children means that Jamaican children are being targeted by traffickers."

Cooper said it was against that background that it was urgent that the stop order the group has been advocating for more than a year be implemented.

"Jamaica cannot afford to drag our feet about implementing proven systems and available techniques to protect our children. We are calling on the police, the Ministry of Justice, the Task Force on Human Trafficking and the Government at large, to implement these urgently needed measures now."

Between January 1 and November 13, a total of 1,808 Jamaican children 0-17 years old were reported missing. Of these, 1,278 are known to have returned home, four are known to have died and 526 are still missing.

Cooper told The Gleaner that while there are repeat persons who runaway in the statistics, they do not make up a significant portion of the amount.

Dryden was arrested at the US Embassy in Kingston last week after she tried to obtain a visa for a 16-year-old girl she claimed she had adopted.

Investigators found out the adoption was illegal and the woman has been linked to scores of other missing children.

Maybe that woman they arrested at the Embassy in Kingston recently can shed some light on some of the children.

Let me search the Gleaner/Observer for the article.
