  • NDM outlines ambitious plans for governance and the economy

The National Democratic Movement (NDM) also launched its Manifesto.

In it, the party proposes that no Prime Minister would be allowed to serve more than two consecutive terms.

It says Members of Parliament and Senators would also not be allowed to serve more than three consecutive terms.

According to the NDM, elections would be held on a fixed date or after a period of every five years.

The party also has plans for the impeachment of public officials.

It says provisions would be established in the constitution for this, so that public officials who are found guilty of negligence, abuse of authority or subversion of the democratic process would be held accountable.

On the issue of eliminating corruption, the NDM says it will establish an Independent Prosecutor General to investigate and prosecute corrupt public officials.

Peter Townsend, NDM Chairman, also touched on how an NDM administration would help to reduce crime.

“Because everybody would have to have this ID from birth and so when police pick up a man and they run his ID it will tell them where he is from, if he works, if he doesn’t work, everything will be there and so the law locking up people for 72-hours will become unnecessary and so it would not just control crime, but assist with the justice process,” Mr. Townsend said.

On the issue of the economy, Mr. Townsend outlined an ambitious plan.

“We believe in totally phasing out income tax over a five year period and perhaps increase GCT to 20%. We believe that GCT can be reduced to 15% but get rid of the zero-rated items and some people would say why would you remove zero-rated items, the reality is that when you subsidize those items you are subsidizing the rich,” Mr. Townsend said.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
