    I Love It!

Skeng D: While I love rock music (rock and jazz are, without question, my favorite forms of music), I have never been a great fan of Heavy Metal rock. However, as in other forms of rock, the musicians who play this sub-genre are generally technically brilliant (you have to be really good to play those fast notes and power chords and beats at that speed and volume without making mistakes). At the same time I’m aware that as far as its message and influence are concerned, Heavy Metal is among the most problematic of the music genres emanating from the Americas.

Now, to answer your question, I honestly like this recording, “This Dark Day” by Aragorn. In fact, I like it very much! The arrangement, with its emphasis on dynamics, is certainly interesting and the lyrics are haunting:
“I’ll close my eyes and I’ll drift away
I’ll make it through my darkest day”

This song, which in my opinion is a ballad done in Heavy Metal style, is a song that grows on you; with each playing, it becomes more infectious, until it plays in your head all day.

Thank you for introducing me to this recording. I’ve played the video four times already and with each playing I’m getting to love this song and music more and more. Now, if only I could get the damn song from playing in my head for the rest of the day!

        Now, A Question For You

        Skeng D:

My question for you is this: Are the lyrics of “This Dark Day” by Aragorn positive and optimistic (hinting at an eventual change for the better in the individual; an improvement in his condition), or do the lyrics create a dark and depressing imagery? Take special note of the last line of the song.

I've been under for way too long
I sit and I shake, my heart starts to race
The poison lingers in my veins
        I'm fading, suffocating

I'll close my eyes and I'll drift away
I'll make it through my darkest day
And I'll sing this song at the top of my lungs
Until this dark day is done

        You said I'd never change
You said I'd never had the strength
        To break away

        But now I've changed
It's time to turn the page
        And walk away

        It's time to walk away
        It's time to walk away

I'll open my eyes and I'll stay awake
I made it through my darkest day
And I'll sing this song at the top of my lungs
Now that this dark day is done

I'll open my eyes and I'll stay awake
I made it through my darkest day
And I'll sing this song at the top of my lungs
Now that this dark day is done
Now that this dark day is done

I'm flushing the pills, I've lost all my will
This has been haunting me way too long
And I can't rewind, I'm the suffering kind
I've been abusing way too long
        I'm breaking, suffocating

I'll close my eyes and I'll drift away
I'll make it through my darkest day
And I'll sing this song at the top of my lungs
Until this dark day is done

Now I'm trapped in the wake of all my mistakes

Nothing like a rich voice and acoustic music to “calm” one’s spirit (lol).

Peter, I still remember those young Asian (I believe South Korean) guitar players whose videos you posted about a year ago. If I was a beginning music student, I believe I would have immediately ended my budding music career after watching those two young Asian guitarists! They are absolutely incredible!

Wow, how did I make that mistake?! (I should have paid closer attention to the arrangement of the title at the top of the YouTube video!)

Thanks for the clarification, boss. I’ve never heard of the group 12 Stones, but I like their sound -- like it very much. And you answered my question (albeit indirectly).

positive and optimistic..........I dont think you can feel down after hearing the chorus

Now I'm trapped in the wake of all my mistakes

are you sure that is the last line?

Damn, I’m acting like a drunken man this morning and turning this serious, interesting thread into a comedy!

You are definitely correct, as the line I posted is not the last line of the song. Here are the last five lines (and this now makes my question irrelevant, because the optimism is obvious):

I'll open my eyes and I'll stay awake
I made it through my darkest day
And I'll sing this song at the top of my lungs

Sounds metallic to me, but I am no expert on this.
