I have a friend, who travelled from Jamaica to NY last month; he was surprised to discover at JFK Immigration that his passport had expired (as all of the checkpoints in Jamaica missed it.)

Homeland Security detained him for over 3 hours, but they treated him with DIGNITY, and he was allowed to complete his 2 weeks visit here.
