  • PNP explains JEEP

The People’s National Party (PNP) has sought to explain how the proposed Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP) would be implemented if it forms the next government.

The PNP said JEEP would be implemented in the short-term to help with the current unemployment problems.

It said funding for the initiative will be derived from existing State resources chief of which would be the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP).

The PNP said 25 per cent of the budget for JDIP would be allocated to JEEP and those funds would be complemented by resources from the Tourism Enhancement Fund.

It said the resources would be channeled into labour– intensive infrastructure projects, such as the construction of retaining walls, paving of gullies and reforestation.

The PNP has sought to assure that proper systems would be put in place to ensure transparency, accountability and efficiency.

It said a PNP Administration would also provide opportunities for private sector firms to complement the JEEP activities in creating employment.

Measures to encourage such investments would come in the form of tax incentives, which would be maintained for an initial three-year period.
