PS to hire thousands for power plant project

More than 2,000 persons will be given jobs to construct the Jamaica Public Service Company's (JPS) new power plant in Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine.
In what is expected to be the single largest investment in Jamaica, US$602 million or JA$52 billion will be spent on building the plant which will provide 360 mega watts of new generating capacity.
The plant will burn natural gas, with diesel as backup fuel.
The venture is the result of a partnership between majority shareholders of JPS, Marubeni and Korea East West Power (EWP), with JPS as a minority partner.
The entities will form a new corporation, which will be responsible for the implementation of the construction project.
The 360 mega watts of new capacity will be commissioned into service in 2014.
Hisatsugu Hirai, Chairman of Marubeni Caribbean, says the plant will help to reduce electricity rates by about 30% due to the cheaper cost of natural gas and the greater efficiency of the new generating units.
