PNP candidate hospitalised after crash

People's National Party candidate Cedric Stewart of East Central St James has been admitted in hospital after being involved in a vehicular accident in St Catherine this afternoon.

Stewart had to be rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital after the crash, which left him severely injured.

The Gleaner was told that the accident occurred after another motorist lost control of his vehicle.

The crash occurred along the Dyke Road in St Catherine.

Constable Barrington Robinson of the St Catherine South Traffic Department told The Gleaner, that the candidate was driving his Toyota Prado SUV westerly along the road.

Upon reaching a section of the road, a truck travelling in the opposite direction attempted to pass another vehicle.

The driver lost control, the truck then spun and hit the candidate's vehicle.

He is said to have suffered multiple fractures to his upper body and his feet.

The driver of the truck is being interrogated by the police.

Stewart is scheduled to face the Jamaica Labour Party's Ed Bartlett in the December 29 General Election.

Horace Chang in hospital with broken arm

Housing Minister Dr. Horace Chang remains hospitalised with a broken arm, following a crash on the Dyke Road in Portmore, St. Catherine this morning.

Chang is being treated at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Doctors at the hospital performed X-rays to determine the extent of his injuries.

A senior official in the Ministry of Housing and Water told our news centre that Chang may have to undergo surgery.

Chang’s wife, Paulette, who was also injured in the accident, is in stable condition, according to the official.

The driver of the minister’s vehicle was reportedly treated for minor injuries and released.

The Changs were en route to the funeral of the prime minister’s mother, Enid Golding, when the accident occurred.

According to eye witness accounts, the vehicle, in which the Changs were travelling, was heading north on Dyke Road.

The driver of a Suzuki motorcar reportedly tried to navigate a turn, when the vehicle carrying the Changs hit the car before overturning and settling in a gully.

Devon Brooks, a motorist on the scene, told The Gleaner he helped to remove the Changs from the vehicle, which was partially submerged in sewage water.

The driver of the Suzuki was taken to Spanish Town Hospital while the minister and his wife were transported to the University Hospital of the West Indies.
