We don't know what happened...which is why I say in my post IF there was a massacre. Yes the New Yorker headline makes that call which is not proved..yet

But knowing Jamaican police...the probability of some sort of a massacre or extra-judicial killing is very high

THUGS CALLED IN TO DEFEND DUDUS

Jamaica Star Sept 4, 2009. (Days after it was made public that Dudus was (in Buju Voice) "WAnted out a Station!")

Thugs from west Kingston have reportedly sent for reinforcements from other communities as far away as Montego Bay to ensure that the authorities will not have an easy task should they decide to come for community leader Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

Information reaching THE WEEKEND STAR is that Coke's supporters from areas like Mountain View, Spanish Town, May Pen and several other communities are threatening to rebel should the security forces try to take him in. This is in addition to the stance taken by the men from west Kingston, who are bracing for "whatever" as they vow to defend their beloved don.

The United States has requested Coke's extradition after he was featured on that country's Justice Department's list of the world's most dangerous drug kingpins. An Associated Press story out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, earlier this week revealed that the United States has asked Jamaica to extradite Coke to face federal drug and weapons charges in New York. He is charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and marijuana and conspiracy to illegally traffic in firearms. The charges were revealed in an indictment that was unsealed Friday in the United States' Southern District of New York.

        pure mad head

Sources in West Kingston say benefits have been promised to those who have joined the cause. "Right ya now a pure mad head from all bout, some man whe nuh have nuttin fi live fear. When it done if dem survive dem ago have summ'n tho," one man revealed.

Preparation activities have already started and include posting men at strategic points within the community and even putting mattresses on top of houses for thugs.

THE WEEKEND STAR has learnt that some residents have even fled the area amidst the rumours of the possible capture. Others are bracing for the worst. They say Coke is responsible for the "order" in West Kingston. "Look how West Kingston peaceful and now dem waah it end," a 25-year-old thug from Denham Town said.

Should Dudus leave, one of his relative is expected to take control of the community.

When THE STAR contacted police in West Kingston, East Kingston and St Catherine, the lawmen collectively said that they were not aware of any organisation of the thugs, nor of areas in their divisions planning to "disrupt proceedings" should an attempt be made to arrest Coke. One officer said that checks would be made and promised a future update.

In a release issued by the United States Attorney, Southern District of New York, and posted on the United States' Department of Justice website, stated that if convicted, Coke faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years. The West Kingston strongman could also be potentially fined up to US$4 million or twice the monetary gain from the offence. On the firearms trafficking charge, Coke faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of up to US$250,000 or twice the monetary gain.

Everywhere have hypocrites..that is not news. You come here talking about 'law enforcement' when you defended the Tivoli garrison slackness, or didn't you? yes, the place had to be dismantled and yes, they had to go in ALTHOUGH it should have been avoided...remember that little matter with the ex-PM?
OK - so they went in and retrieved 4 guns??? Raised eyebrows should say either the guns were being hidden or taken away or there none. Right? What about the residents (party colleagues) that say their males were 'executed'? Should they get their justice? Or not?
If it can be established that the men "died in the line of duty" - all 73 of them...well I guess they should be given posthumous awards for civic duty.
What it is you really want - equal rights, peace or justice? Mek up yu mind.

the thugs them did leave before the army guh in

Above the melee was the P-3 Orion, filming the events of May 24 with its onboard cameras. A Jamaican photographer snapped photos of it. Schwartz filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Department of Homeland Security and confirmed its presence. “All scenes were continuously recorded,” a Homeland Security document Schwartz acquired confirms.

The video, said to have been screened in a joint U.S.-Jamaican operations center in Kingston, has never been released. Its contents are politically dangerous for a Jamaican government still reeling from Tivoli Gardens. (Coke was eventually arrested and convicted in New York; Golding resigned.) And the documents Schwartz acquired suggest that there might have been U.S. operatives on the ground during the raid, which the U.S. denies.
But it might answer some of the questions about exactly how 73 residents of the neighborhood and one soldier died. “My belief is that the video could help identify exactly which members of the Jamaican security forces were where, and when,” Schwartz says. “Until the identities of these individuals are made known, and some court or other investigative body compels them to give public testimony, we will not have a final answer to these disturbing and credible allegations.”

Coke’s power was so great that Prime Minister Bruce Golding spent months resisting the extradition order. But in early May, 2010, under heavy international political pressure, Golding authorized Coke’s arrest. In response, Coke converted Tivoli and nearby Denham Town into a personal fortress.

No fewer than seventy-four people were killed in the operation to arrest Christopher Coke and extradite him to the United States—one soldier and seventy-three civilians. Among the dead were at least three women and one United States citizen.

Three more residents of Tivoli Gardens, including a sixteen-year-old boy, are missing and presumed dead. The Jamaican security forces say that many of the dead were armed gunmen allied with Coke, but the security forces recovered only six guns during the assault. According to extensive interviews with Tivoli Gardens residents and Jamaican officials, the resistance that the security forces encountered in Tivoli was quickly overpowered.

Coke and most of his gunmen are believed to have fled when the siege began, escaping through a network of gullies and sewers. The rest of the battle was not a firefight so much as a police operation. The security forces rounded up residents and conducted searches from house to house.

Unarmed men of fighting age were interrogated on the spot, and more than a thousand were sent to detention centers, from which they were released a few days later. Dozens were allegedly shot to death in custody.

A year and a half later, the Jamaican government has refused to make public what it knows about how the men and women of Tivoli died. So has the government of the United States, despite clear evidence that a U.S. surveillance plane flying above Kingston on May 24th was taking live video of Tivoli and that intelligence from the video feed was passed through U.S. law enforcement officers to Jamaican forces on the ground, and that the Department of Homeland Security has a copy of this video.

The video could corroborate, or refute, allegations that members of the Jamaican security forces massacred dozens of innocents, and could help identify the alleged killers
