    How Hugh Hart, 'Butch' Stewart helped reduce election violence

    MANY of the behind-the-scenes manoeuverings that result in major national developments are often never revealed to the public. There is an interesting story that did not make the headlines but which assisted in achieving the increasingly peaceful elections in Jamaica that some now take for granted.

    As told by Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, the Sandals hotel tycoon who also owns the Jamaica Observer, Hugh Hart, the then tourism minister and he came up with a joint proposal to help reduce violence in the 1989 election campaign. Since then, Jamaican election campaigns have grown increasingly more peaceful.
