Lisa Gets 'Best Debator'
Readers of The Gleaner's Facebook page have been commenting on the first political debates just ended featuring a team from the People’s National Party (PNP) and another from the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
The debate focused on socio-economic issues from a youth perspective.
The PNP comprised Dr. Dayton Campbell, Lisa Hanna and Raymond Pryce while Team JLP comprised Dr. Saphire Longmore, Warren Newby and Marlene Malahoo-Forte
Readers commenting on The Gleaner’s Facebook page so far says Hanna was the best of the debators this evening.

AUDIO: Pryce, Malahoo Forte Trade Insults At Political Debat
The People’s National Party’s (PNP) Raymond Pryce and the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Marlene Malahoo Forte traded insults at the first political debates Saturday night.
It intensified when Pryce objected to a response by Malahoo Forte regarding the Trafigura matter.
Pryce had defended the action of five PNP officials including President Portia Simpson Miller to use the court to avoid being forced to answer questions about the Trafigura donation to the party saying it was their constitutional right to do so.
But Malahoo Forte suggested that the action of the PNP showed that it was paying "lip service" to the fight against corruption.
Pryce retorted: “As a former resident magistrate, to so callously disregard the rules of the court and our constitution is shameless, graceless and vulgar.”
That comment would draw a terse response from the JLP debator: “What Raymond has done demonstrates the old politics of nasty attacks and getting personal and it is so wrong. I know many of you, like me, are just tired of that old politics,” said Malahoo Forte.
Five PNP officials are now in before the court regarding the donation of $31 million to the party in 2006.
The PNP has claimed that it returned the money which it said was a contribution, but the Dutch authorities are probing Trafigura for bribery and wants to question the PNP officials about the donation.

NATIONAL POLITICAL DEBATES - Analysts Give PNP The Edge
Three randomly selected analysts unanimously gave the People's National Party (PNP) team of debaters the nod over their Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) counterparts during last night's debate on socio-economic issues from a youth perspective.
The debate was the first of three national debates to be staged ahead of the December 29 general election.
The analysts, who watched or listened to the 90-minute debate separately, gave the PNP higher marks than the JLP in the three grading areas of content, relevance and clarity.
Esther Tyson, veteran educator, said the PNP team of Dr Dayton Campbell, Lisa Hanna and Raymond Pryce came better prepared with facts, while Team JLP, comprising Dr Saphire Longmore, Warren Newby and Marlene Malahoo Forte, seemed more content to refer to what Prime Minister Andrew Holness was doing.
Jeffrey Brown, youth advocate, said the PNP came out on top in the areas of clarity and content, but felt that both parties failed miserably in the category of relevance. "They were both reiterating the old political rhetoric. It wasn't new and fresh, so I had difficulty in picking a winner in that category," said Brown.
Last night's debate was unofficially billed as the youth debate, as it was supposed to showcase the best of what the parties had to offer for the future. However, though giving the PNP the nod in the team debate, the youth advocate was far from impressed. "If this is the best that both parties have to offer, I think we would have a problem (in the future)," said Brown.
Dr Leahcim Semaj, psychologist and CEO of the Job Bank, also said Team PNP was the clear winner. "The People's National Party, on my scorecard, almost had a complete sweep. They came prepared. They put together a team that was much better prepared," he said.
Semaj said the debate was a teachable moment on the lesson that youth by itself will not suffice. "Youth provides energy and excitement, but something else is required to give you competence. Youth by itself is not the answer," said Semaj.
Two of the analysts said Hanna was the best debater, while two said Malahoo Forte was the worst.

Relevance
Team PNP. Again, they came prepared with facts, the JLP (team) kept referring to what the prime minister was doing and they didn't seem as prepared.

Lisa Hanna. She was clear in her presentation, content and relevance of what to say. Whether or not they would work is another matter. She was not afraid of the camera. She was convincing in terms of her approach.
I thought (Raymond Pryce) became too personal, which is why I liked Lisa Hanna's approach.
Worst Debater
Dr Saphire Longmore from Team JLP. She is not a debater. They shouldn't have put her on the team.

I had a problem in terms of relevance because they were both reiterating the old political rhetoric. It wasn't new and fresh, so I had difficulty in picking a winner.

Team PNP was much clearer in articulating their points. They sought to provide answers to specific questions being asked rather than going off on a tangent.
Best Debater
Raymond Pryce. He was getting at the JLP and trying to get a response out of them on key issues.
Worst Debater
Marlene Malahoo Forte. She communicated with too much ethos; too much emotion rather than facts.

Team PNP. They were more prepared in terms of answering the questions with the data they provided. They were much sounder and their responses were well-thought through.

Lisa Hanna. The evenness of her tone and the fact that she drew on historical data. She also admitted to weaknesses and mistakes and indicated how things would be better.
Worst Debater
Marlene Malahoo Forte. Debate is about information, style and presentation. A lot of her answers were undiluted fluff. She was by far the worst.Comment
