CUBAN PRESIDENT Raul Castro yesterday slammed United States (US) President Barack Obama for failing to keep a commitment he made at the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Port-of-Spain in April 2009 to lift the 49-year-old embargo which the US placed on Cuba since 1962.

Castro issued this condemnation as he addressed the opening ceremony of the Fourth Caricom- Cuba Summit at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA).

His condemnation came on the heels of calls earlier in the ceremony by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas for the embargo to be lifted. The embargo was implemented against Cuba by US President John F Kennedy on February 7, 1962.

He caused the audience to laugh when he said his English was “very, very bad.” Disclosing that his mother hired a Jamaican woman to teach him English when he was a boy, Castro said he often “went to play” when his mother was not looking and his tutor kept his secret.

Raul is the one who needs to convince Congress to lift the embargo. US elections are in one year and Obama is unlikely to burn any political capital on Cuba. If it was not for the "free oil" from Uncle Hugo Chavez, the Cuban economy would have collapsed years ago.

Thanks HL. The revolution has lost it's way and has become basically a criminal regime as far as the working class, especially the black youths of Cuba are concerned. Russia moved on, China moved on, Vietnam moved on, but these clueless idiots can't seem to move at all.

Tourism alone could jump start Cubas' economy.

In fact, Tourism in cuba attracts well over 2 million people/year. It's the military who run the tourism industry.

Cuba does not really need the US as much as they claim. LOTS of other developed country trade with Cuba.....

The idea of taking responsibility is not only lost on SOME individuals--it is also lost on lots of third world leaders.

Cuba is doing better than Jamaica in education & health.Our wealth which is concentrated in a small % & of our population isnt anything to boast about it goes hand in hand with our corruption.

Cuba has China ,Brazil & Venezueala to help with its issues , no IMF and they are doing fine, funny, ironic they said communism would fall in this recession?

Communism will fall when the cuban people get rich like China.

Cuba is better off than all of the third world and by its educaton and health care standards it would be classified as a developing nation, keep in mind Cuba has started to give thier citizens certain ownership rights and the freedom to sell produce .

We can sit here and throw stones at Cuba ,the last thing the carribbean wants is a free,educated , 1st world health care developing cuba to compete with, we cannot.

Cuba is better off than we think,Brazilian home improvement chain to have a presence in Havana

Palco, according to Reuters, plans to open a small store modeled after the nine “home center” stores TendTudo has operated in Brazil’s biggest cities since 1987. Palco owns a small shopping center in western Havana.
Looking a lot like Atlanta-based Home Depot, TendTudo stores offer electric supplies, tools and hardware, basic materials, plumbing parts, doors and windows, lighting supplies, paint, floors and floor coverings, and garden supplies.
TendTudo, a company official told Reuters, hopes Cuba could be a $400 million market. The Cuban government recently allowed the purchase and sale of homes, and has granted hundreds of thousands of licenses for private businesses. Retail is still state-controlled in Cuba.
“There are important challenges, but for us it’s a long-term objective,” Carlos Christensen, head of TendTudo’s international division, told the news agency. “The idea is to start small and go accompanying the changes in the Cuban market.”
