  • JLP candidate in trouble with tax authorities while former P

Jamaica Labour Party Caretaker/Candidate for North-West St. Catherine, Dr. Sandra Nesbeth, has found herself in trouble with the tax authorities.

The medical doctor has been delinquent in making tax returns to the government, and was arrested Friday morning, and hauled before the court.

Dr. Nesbeth, who is gearing up to contest the upcoming general election, appeared in the Spanish Town Tax Court, after she was cited for tax evasion.

She was granted bail in the sum of $50,000.00 and is scheduled to return to court on January 23. Dr. Nesbeth has been confirmed to contest the North-West St. Catherine seat, which is now represented by the People's National Party Chairman, Robert Pickersgill.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the governing party could be looking elsewhere to replace Dr. Nesbeth. A high ranking JLP source who was contacted Friday afternoon expressed reservations that the medical doctor will be given the green light to run for the party in light of the tax evasion case that has been brought against her.

Former PNP candidate aspirant in visa racket

And a St. Catherine business man who was being seriously considered by People's National Party to represent the party in the upcoming general election is now in police custody, facing several counts of fraud charges, after a visa racket was exposed.

Douglas Thomas, who was vying to become the parliamentary representative for Central St. Catherine, has been charged with multiple counts of fraudulent conversion. Thomas has been in custody for the last seven days.

It is understood that Thomas, who operates an employment agency in Spanish Town, collected large sums of money from several persons, promising them United States Visa and employment opportunities.

Reports are that when Thomas failed to deliver on his promises, reports were lodged with the Spanish Town Police.

It is understood that more than 40 persons made complaints against Mr. Thomas, to the police. Mr Thomas was seeking to face off with the JLP's Olivia "Babsy" Grange for the Central St. Catherine seat.

Up to recently, he was featured on the Peoples National Party's website as a candidate for the party. However, his picture is not in the line-up of the St. Catherine PNP representatives.
