  • Calls for Mike Henry to step away from political post

There is a call for Mike Henry to also step aside as Chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
Political Commentator, Kevin O'brien Chang, says if Mr. Henry remains in the post it will tarnish the party's image.
“Yes, I think he should, his credibility has been totally compromised and I think we would be better off if the party was without him because this is our government and one of the two major parties. We should not have a man whose credibility is so compromised in that position, that is my view,” Mr. Chang said.
And Mr. O'brien Chang also wants Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Works, Dr. Alwyn Hales, removed from the position in light of the recent developments concerning the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP).
“Because if I am correct I heard him on air, he said first that the Auditor General didn’t give him enough time to respond to her report and then later on he said that it’s not true, he did have enough time so that’s back tracking on his word so I can’t have any confidence in him either, the whole structure, the NWA, the Ministry of Transport needs a total house cleaning,” he said.
Meanwhile, as the JLP gets ready for full scale campaigning ahead of the general election there are predictions that the Party will suffer some fallout from the JDIP Affair.
Political Commentator Shalman Scott says Mr. Henry's resignation and the series of events concerning JDIP have come at a bad time for the ruling party:
“The timing could not be worse, especially against the background of the fact that the country is actually already in [election mode]. The whole issue of the JDIP has cast a very poor light on the government,” Mr. Scott said.
And who will replace Mr. Henry at the Transport and Works Ministry?
Kevin O'brien Chang believes that Prime Minister Holness should assign State Minister Othneil Lawrence temporary responsibility for the Ministry.
“Promote the deputy. Election is on, so he won’t have much time for that, either he will have a new Cabinet soon of the PNP will have a new Minister of Transport,”
“But for now let’s promote the deputy, that’s what he’s there for, you have a deputy in case the top man steps down so put him in place and let him deal with it for the short time. He was good enough to be deputy, good enough to take over when the head mans steps down,” Mr. Chang said.

Holness to update on transport ministry

Debbie-Ann Wright and Monique Grange, Gleaner Writers

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is expected today to release a statement on the future of the transport and works ministry and the possible appointment of a new minister.

Mike Henry resigned as transport minister last night in the wake of allegations of irregularities and fraud at his ministry.

It also comes just over a week after the prime minister stripped Henry of the responsibility for the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP).

When contacted this morning, the minister with responsibility for information, Arthur Williams, would not comment on what decisions have been taken regarding Henry’s replacement.

He would only say that a statement would be released by the Office of the Prime minister in the matter today.

However, social commentator, Richard Crawford, said with an election on the horizon, a new transport minister is not necessary at this time.

He said the prime minister must now see to a comprehensive investigation of the operations of the ministry, if the Government is to restore its credibility ahead of national polls.

Meanwhile, political commentator, Shalmon Scott said Mike Henry’s resignation could have implications for the JLP, of which he is chairman.

Scott said Henry’s resignation shows that despite one’s track record as a performer it is not impossible to be affected by unfortunate circumstances.

He also noted that the JLP must now consider what Mr. Henry’s resignation means for the party.

This call was not necessary as it appears he was being shown the door anyways with Bobby Monteith being endorsed by the young people arm of the JLP to be the next chairman...it had appeared a done deal.

What hey need now is to find his replacement as MP and send him out to pasture with Pernel and Roger and yes Sister P

Henry should stay on as MP — Shaw

JAMAICA Labour Party Deputy Leader Finance Minister Audley Shaw, says there is no reason for former Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry to resign as member of parliament for Central Clarendon.

Speaking with reporters ahead of this mornings tour of Manchester, Shaw said the former minister has already done the honourable thing.

Shaw said Henry has been a faithful MP and he sees no reason why Henry shouldn't be the party's candidate for Central Clarendon.

I've heard Henry saying he will never retire ... and if he is unable to walk he will get a youngster to push him around in a wheel chair. This is the ideal time to make him walk the plank.
