Kuti Ra Mahakoe is not your normal 12-year-old. While his peers were busy preparing for end-of-year examinations in primary school, and day- dreaming of their first day at high school, Kuti was busy studying for high-school exams.
He took and passed an astonishing six CSEC subjects. He also passed his GSAT exams for Jamaica College, and because of his strong academic capabilities, he was placed in third form.
In October, he was given an academic award from the Portmore Municipal Council. Kuti Ra is the municipality's 12-year-old prodigy, and one can without a doubt say he has a brain quite like no other - a little scientist in the making.
He won the St Catherine leg of the Jamaica Library Service National Reading Competition and represented the parish at the finals in 2006. In 2009, he placed fifth out of 63 students in the Gleaner's St Catherine Spelling Bee.
Kuti, who is home-schooled, is very focused and driven. He said that he loves science and spends hours studying and doing research on animals, particularly birds and reptiles. He does his own research on plants and rare species.
very artistic
Kuti is intrigued by nature and wildlife. The brilliant youngster is very artistic and loves to make models of animals out of clay.
His parents admit that Kuti has "a very deep and critical mind," and while watching television, he questions and challenges everything, and he watches cartoons and advertisements with the same analytical approach that he commits to everything else.
Kuti's ambition is to become a scientist, marine biologist or a palaeontologist. A Palaeontologist is a scientist who studies the fossils of animals and plants from the past to learn what the earth was like and what kind of animals and plants lived on the earth millions of years ago.
