Sentence seems a bit harsh and it makes you wonder whether the report did not include the man's antecedents and if this was his first time facing the court on any charge he could have gotten a suspended sentence.

The GG as well being a good christian, could have asked that the judge warn the man..unless they have been having a spate of small robberies and are fed up with it.

Another question is who really was the complainant, the GG or the Government who really owns the house

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

HUMAN rights group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) today dubbed the sentencing of a man who was caught stealing ackees at the Governor General's residence at Kings House as harshly excessive.

Junior Christe, 30, was sentenced to three months by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey after he pleaded guilty to praedial larceny. News of the sentencing has brought cries of condemnation from JFJ, who issued a release decrying the magistrate's action.

"The imposition by a Resident Magistrate of a three month sentence for the stealing of 45 ackee pods from the Governor General’s land appears to be manifestly excessive on the face of it," the release stated.

The group also had problems with statements attributed to Pusey in the report which appeared in today's edition of the Daily Observer.

"The statements attributed to the RM by the press, if true, give grave cause for concern as to the equal and impartial application of time-honoured principles of justice by our courts. The sentence and the remarks reported will only serve to reinforce the widely held belief that there is one standard of justice for the rich and another for the poor," the statement said.

                              That's another important question

But it's foolish to use a sledgehammer to kill a fly. No way should someone go to jail for $5 worth of ackee... that's colonial madness
