The People’s National Party (PNP) is dismissing as erroneous statements in the public arena that its President Portia Simpson-Miller is being shielded from participating in national debates ahead of the general election.
In a statement on Thursday night the Party categorically stated that Mrs. Simpson-Miller is prepared to participate fully in a national debate.
It says having served as Prime Minister, Minister of Government and competently represented the country in various local and international fora, Mrs. Simpson Miller is capable and willing to debate any member of the governing Jamaica Labour Party.
It adds that the Opposition Leader and the PNP view the national debate as an important forum for among other things articulating the economic and social issues impacting the lives of Jamaicans; presenting the Party's plans, as well as for holding the Government to account for its many policy failures over the past four years.
The PNP says it remains committed to the process of negotiation with the Jamaica Debates Commission and holds firm to its position, expressed earlier, not to be forced into public negotiations of the details, format or style of any such national debate.
The Gary Allen-led Commission is still in talks with the two main political parties on arrangements for the proposed debates.
