President of the Peoples National Party, Portia Simpson Miller says a future government led by her would rollback the contentious General Consumption Tax, GCT, on electricity.
"How many of you can pay your light bill? you plug out everything and leave your house for days and still at the end of the month you still pay more than you did before, well the next PNP government will remove GCT from electricity"
General Consumption Tax, GCT, on electricity only applies to persons who use more than 200 kilowatt hours per month. The government has said 74 percent of Jamaicans do not pay that tax but the Opposition has insisted that it be removed.
Mrs Simpson Miller said the removal of the GCT from the light bill will also be extended to the productive and business sectors in order to improve productivity and create more jobs.
The PNP leader added that her government will also address the situation regarding reconnection fees with the JPS.
Meanwhile, the PNP President has moved to dismiss suggestions that her party is resisting national debates because she does not want a one on one face off against Prime Minister Andrew Holness:
"Let me say something to them , I have had to face the international community as Minister of Government them even before I became Prime Minister. I have never brought Jamaica to disgrace internationally. The other driver crashed the bus, this new driver, how can you stand up beside a Portia Simpson Miller with my years of experience?
On Friday, the National Debates Commission said despite a general agreement between the two major political parties about the need for a debate, they were yet to finalise plans.
