  • Appeals court upholds bail for Patrick Powell

    Barbara Gayle, Staff Reporter

The Court of Appeal has upheld the bail offer granted to businessman Patrick Powell last week.

Powell is accused of the murder of former Kingston College student Khajeel Mais, 17, in the X6 case.

Supreme Court Judge Carol Beswick offered bail to Powell last Wednesday in the sum of $10 million with one or two sureties.

However, he had to remain in jail because the prosecution objected to the offer and subsequently appealed the granting of bail to the accused.

The prosecution had argued that there is a real flight risk and that Powell could interfere with the course of justice.

A short while ago, the Court of Appeal ruled that Justice Beswick did not act improperly when she granted bail to Powell.

This means that arrangements can now be completed for Powell to be released from custody on bond.

As part of the conditions for bail, he will have to report to the Matilda’s Corner Police three times each week.

Powell will also be required to surrender his travel documents.

Powell is being represented by attorneys-at-law, Patrick Atkinson and Deborah Martin.

Khajeel Mais was shot dead on July 1 when the driver of a BMW X6 reportedly opened fire on the taxi in which he was travelling after it bumped into the sport utility vehicle (SUV).
