Another journalism lesson. It is important that when we report on people we are obligated to provide age, address, occupation etc as there are so many people with the same name.

There have been many suits settled out of court where reports are published that causes embarrassment for a name sake.

There was one case I know of while at the Gleaner, forget the name snow but one person was arrested for carnal abuse and his name was in the headline and the story spoke of the parish he was from but no age or occupation.

There was a businessman in the parish with the same name and he was bombarded with calls from family and friends and even abusive calls from detractors.

The Gleaner never even tried to defend itself and had to run several apologies.
Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.

VIDEO: Shelter Rock residents protest police killing of two

RESIDENTS in Shelter Rock, a community on the outskirts of Spanish Town, St Catherine, yesterday staged a protest outside the area following the controversial shooting deaths of two young men by the police on Monday.

Police report that 18-year-old Dane Smith, also known as 'Cutty', and 17-year-old Saint Patrick Atkinson were among four men who opened fire on a foot patrol at about 5:45 pm.

        [ video link http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...v=tiQGbIo4E0g]

According to the Constabulary Communication Network, the police engaged the men in a firefight, resulting in both Smith and Atkinson being shot.
Police said a .38 Smith and Wesson revolver and three spent shells were recovered from one of the men.

Both men, the police said, succumbed to their injuries at hospital.
But yesterday, residents challenged the police story and accused them of killing the two men in cold blood.

"A me nephew first dem kill. Police hold him, put him on him knee and shot him," said one woman who gave her name as Anthia and who said she was a relative of Atkinson.

Her story was corroborated by a male protester who said: "A kill dem kill de youth dem; the police come inna the area, hold the two youth, put dem down on dem knee and shot dem."

The man said that if the matter was not properly investigated residents would not vote in the upcoming general election.
The Independent Commission of Investigations has since opened a probe into the matter.
