    Bunting
Central Manchester MP labels Shaw's allegations 'vicious', 'spurious'
Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Manchester, Peter Bunting, has characterised as vicious and spurious, allegations made against him by Audley Shaw, the MP for the neighbouring North East Manchester.

Bunting told The Gleaner yesterday that Shaw's latest verbal attack has been so vitriolic that it is outside the purview of the Political Ombudsman Bishop Herro Blair.

This marks the second week that Shaw has made damning allegations against Bunting.

Bunting, the general secretary of the People's National Party (PNP), told The Gleaner he could not exercise any other option but to seek legal redress against Shaw, a deputy leader in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

"The allegations are baseless and defamatory and the matter has been referred to my lawyers for the appropriate action," said Bunting.

He was referring to comments made by Shaw at the Area Council Three constituency conference at the Manchester High School in Mandeville on Sunday.

Bunting would not say much on the matter, but disclosed that he has retained the services of high-profile attorney Michael Hylton, a former solicitor general, to pursue legal action on his behalf.

Asked whether he had referred the matter to Blair, Bunting responded, "I think this matter is gone beyond the political ombudsman, it is with my attorney."

Some constituents of Central Manchester have expressed concern about what they characterised as heightened agitation in the constituency, since former Commissioner of Customs Danville Walker was selected by the JLP to challenge Bunting.

Bunting noted that there have been heightened political activities in the constituency, but added: "I certainly don't see any evidence of activity that would lead to these sorts of statements."

He said: "The constituency is fine, it is normally a very peaceful constituency and we have not had any incidents of intimidation or violence, or threats of violence that I am aware of."

Amid the rush of political rhetoric, Bunting said he would not be deterred by any so-called obstacles.

"I am very confident. I have a very strong political machinery in place and I have a strong track record to run on," he said.

Central Manchester has been dominated by the PNP over the years but, with the margin of victory getting slimmer and slimmer, the JLP has had its sight set on the constituency since 2007.

Assisted by the four-time MP for the constituency John Junor, after arriving into Central Manchester at the 11th hour of the 2007 election campaign, Bunting, a former MP in South East Clarendon, defeated a very active JLP campaigner, Sally Porteous.

The Gleaner Company apologises to Mr Peter Bunting, MP for Central Manchester, for the publication of the article, 'No violent poll' in yesterday's edition of the newspaper. The aforementioned article contained serious allegations made by Minister Audley Shaw against Mr Bunting at a JLP Area Council Three meeting in Manchester on November 13. The Gleaner has no evidence whatsoever to substantiate the allegations of Mr Shaw and regrets that the words were published, which was due to an oversight on our part.

Audley Shaw is such a loose cannon, one day his mouth is going to get him into trouble.

Maybe he thinks saying things from a political platform gives him immunity that he has in Parliament.

Seems he cant control himself when he gets on the platform and just say anything that comes to his mouth

This apology will not protect the Gleaner from a law suit as they helped to spread the damages, even if they take the story off the website, it is still in circulation in the hard copy where I just read it and was alarmed at what Shaw said.

If there is a law suit the Gleaner can be named in it.

When the MOF under him watas is not only him mouth miss. Interesting comments from dear Audley. He was probably miffed that Bunting stated that 'Chris' sent Tivoli gunmen to Central Manchester and they gunned down four of Bunting's campaign workers including a woman in the last election. Interestingly, no one on the JLP side threatened to sue over this accusation. Probably Dudus fatigue on their part.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is warning against the use of political violence as a strategy to win votes as the next general election looms.

Speaking at a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Area Council Three meeting at Manchester High in Mandeville yesterday, Holness said instead of interacting and working with the people in the constituency, there were politicians who paid enforcers to drive fear into people to get votes on election day.

The prime minister said it was no coincidence that in his inauguration speech he said he would dismantle garrisons.

"I have a firm commitment that any one of my members found [accommodating] violence, they will be out of my party," Holness declared.

During his presentation, JLP Deputy Leader Audley Shaw accused member of parliament for Central Manchester Peter Bunting of a long history of links to political violence.

"When he was in South East Clarendon, he rained political violence against the then former (JLP) deputy leader, Hugh Shearer. Then he came to Central Manchester and said he was going to lock down Central Manchester. And he did lock it down. Two shops were burned down, houses were fire-bombed, business places were fire-bombed," Shaw argued.

He said the morning before the 2007 general election, two persons were shot and killed, driving fear into people who were going out to vote.

"The morning of the election, 12 roads were blocked and men dressed in orange shirts were telling people that they can't vote," Shaw said.

"I am calling on the commissioner of police that whenever the prime minister rings the bell, that we lock down the security in this constituency because democracy must prevail."

Danville Walker, who is going up against Bunting for the Central Manchester seat, had one of his billboards, erected on Caledonia Road in Mandeville, defaced, sparking heated exchanges between both camps. Walker said that Bunting should stand responsibility for the defaced billboard and replace it while Bunting flatly refused to do so.

                    Challenging the Opposition

"I am challenging the Opposition to make this election the most peaceful election since Independence," Holness said, hours before giving new hints at an Area Council One meeting in West Kingston that the election could be called at the end of December.

"I don't want (to) disturb anybody's Christmas, but I'm sure that people want to have a happy New Year," Holness told party faithful gathered at the Denham Town Community Centre.

Holness, who became prime minister on October 23, even hinted that he could make the announcement at the JLP's annual conference, which is scheduled for next weekend.

"From what I am seeing here today, it will be a massive conference and who knows, who knows, who knows ... ," he said without completing the statement.

During the Area Council One meeting, former prime minister and outgoing member of Parliament for West Kingston, Bruce Golding, passed the baton to his named successor, Desmond McKenzie.

In his farewell speech to residents of the constituency, Golding said last year's incursion by the security forces, "painful as it was", could not have been avoided.

"The security of the State had been confronted and that operation was to begin the resocialisation of Tivoli Gardens," he asserted.
Why would the Gleaner retract the article? They quoted Shaw so I don't see the issue...
