Central Manchester MP labels Shaw's allegations 'vicious', 'spurious'
Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Manchester, Peter Bunting, has characterised as vicious and spurious, allegations made against him by Audley Shaw, the MP for the neighbouring North East Manchester.
Bunting told The Gleaner yesterday that Shaw's latest verbal attack has been so vitriolic that it is outside the purview of the Political Ombudsman Bishop Herro Blair.
This marks the second week that Shaw has made damning allegations against Bunting.
Bunting, the general secretary of the People's National Party (PNP), told The Gleaner he could not exercise any other option but to seek legal redress against Shaw, a deputy leader in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
"The allegations are baseless and defamatory and the matter has been referred to my lawyers for the appropriate action," said Bunting.
He was referring to comments made by Shaw at the Area Council Three constituency conference at the Manchester High School in Mandeville on Sunday.
Bunting would not say much on the matter, but disclosed that he has retained the services of high-profile attorney Michael Hylton, a former solicitor general, to pursue legal action on his behalf.
Asked whether he had referred the matter to Blair, Bunting responded, "I think this matter is gone beyond the political ombudsman, it is with my attorney."
Some constituents of Central Manchester have expressed concern about what they characterised as heightened agitation in the constituency, since former Commissioner of Customs Danville Walker was selected by the JLP to challenge Bunting.
Bunting noted that there have been heightened political activities in the constituency, but added: "I certainly don't see any evidence of activity that would lead to these sorts of statements."
He said: "The constituency is fine, it is normally a very peaceful constituency and we have not had any incidents of intimidation or violence, or threats of violence that I am aware of."
Amid the rush of political rhetoric, Bunting said he would not be deterred by any so-called obstacles.
"I am very confident. I have a very strong political machinery in place and I have a strong track record to run on," he said.
Central Manchester has been dominated by the PNP over the years but, with the margin of victory getting slimmer and slimmer, the JLP has had its sight set on the constituency since 2007.
Assisted by the four-time MP for the constituency John Junor, after arriving into Central Manchester at the 11th hour of the 2007 election campaign, Bunting, a former MP in South East Clarendon, defeated a very active JLP campaigner, Sally Porteous.

The Gleaner Company apologises to Mr Peter Bunting, MP for Central Manchester, for the publication of the article, 'No violent poll' in yesterday's edition of the newspaper. The aforementioned article contained serious allegations made by Minister Audley Shaw against Mr Bunting at a JLP Area Council Three meeting in Manchester on November 13. The Gleaner has no evidence whatsoever to substantiate the allegations of Mr Shaw and regrets that the words were published, which was due to an oversight on our part.
