CHULA VISTA — On March 17, police received a 911 call from a man who said he had killed his wife-to-be at a residence in the 2500 block of Garnet Peak Road and was planning to commit suicide.
"I shouldn't have done it," said the caller. "She's not breathing and there is blood everywhere."
The caller claimed to be Chris Bhoorasingh and told police he had just shot his fiancée, Jenny Thomas.
"She's in the tub and the tub is full of water," said the caller. "I tried to drown her also."
Officers closed a stretch of the street, and administrators at nearby Arroyo Vista Elementary School directed teachers to keep their students secured in their classrooms as a precaution.
A special weapons and tactics team took up positions around the residence while officers tried in vain to contact the man who'd made the emergency call.
The SWAT operation – which also included assistance from the Chula Vista Police Department and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department helicopter – lasted three hours and put many people at risk, police said.
Both Thomas and Bhoorasingh – who are now married – were at work when the 911 call was made.
Police say the call was a cruel hoax that was made possible by using an online electronic device that can feed a false phone number and address to 911.
Investigators said the call was actually made thousands of miles away in Jamaica.
The district attorney's office believes 29-year-old Roshan Shaw was responsible for the call. Police say Shaw is related to Bhoorasingh but his motive for allegedly making the phone call is not clear. A deputy district attorney told 10News that Shaw is also wanted in San Diego County for fraud charges.
An arrest warrant for the phony 911 call is expected soon and neighbors told 10News they are glad.
"It was horrible at the time because I saw the amount of police in the area," said neighbor Angela Reeder.
Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge said the cost for emergency services for his department alone was $14,000. The amount does not include expenses for the helicopter or the fire department.
As for Thomas and Bhoorasingh, they told 10News they have moved on.
