St. Catherine east central Member of Parliament, Natalie Neita-Headley, is calling for laws to prevent politicians switching their political parties in the middle of their term.
This comes against the background of the recent event in which former People’s National Party (PNP) MP, Sharon Hay Webster crossed the floor in Parliament.
Hay Webster switched almost four months after taking her seat in Parliament as an independent member, having resigned as a member of the PNP on June 28 over the party’s handling of her dual citizenship matter.
Speaking at a political meeting in Waterford in Portmore, St. Catherine, last night, Neita-Headley said laws should be enacted to prevent such occurrences.
She argued that voters elect candidates based on the policies of the party to which the candidate is aligned.
Neita Headley is suggesting that there should be a mechanism to either prevent MPs joining other parties in the middle of their term, or to allow the electorate to decide if they still want to be represented by such candidates.
