Gunshot residue found on Khajeel Mais' hand

A forensic report has found that gunshot residue was found on 17-year-old murder victim Khajeel Mais' right hand.

The report was handed over to the attorney representing Mais' accused killer Patrick Powell, was handed over to his attorney Patrick Atkinson, today.

The report revealed the residue was found at the back of his hand at trace level. that aspect of the report was read out in court by Atkinson during a bail application for his client which is still underway in the High Court.

Mais was shot dead in July while he travelled in a taxi in havendale on his way to a fete at the Meadowbrook High School.

Forensic reported disclosed in X6 case

The forensic report in the Khajeel Mais murder case was disclosed in court today as the attorney for the accused, 50-year-old businessman Patrick Powell, continued submissions seeking his bail.

Reading from the document, attorney at law, Patrick Atkinson said the report revealed that traces of gunpowder residue were found on the back of the right hand of the deceased.

Atkinson further said the report indicated that swabs were taken from the palm of Mais’ right hand which also showed gunpowder residue.

The attorney reasoned that the presence of the substance in someone’s hand would mean that a gun was fired.

However, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Caroline Hay dismissed the claim.

In her rebuttal, Hay argued that the trace of gunpowder residue could have been transferred to his hand.

She reasoned that the substance may have been transferred to Mais’ hands while he was being taken to hospital.

The deputy DPP disclosed earlier that forensic data has revealed that the paint samples, which were taken from Powell’s BMW X6 sport utility vehicle (SUV) matched the sample removed from the point of collision on the taxi.

Hay further said the paint samples also match that which was taken from Powell’s business place, where the vehicle was allegedly sprayed.

Supreme Court Judge Carol Beswick, who is to make her decision known tomorrow, said she would need to consider these additional submissions before ruling on the bail application.

Nah the story would not say much as it was on the breaking news page and the newspaper is holding back the 'meat' for the paper tomorrow..but I too am confused and asking those same questions if the youth was shooting at the X6 man and what reason he would have to do so.

...Atkinson trying a thing. Its not like the youth was left on the scene ... wasn't he rushed to the hospital? What if he had fired a gun before going into the taxi? Has nothing to do with the case. Was a gun found on his person? Was a gun found on the taxi driver?

THE so-called X6 killer case took a dramatic twist yesterday when it was revealed in court that gunpowder residue was found on the right hand of 17-year-old murder victim Khajeel Mais.
Revelation about the gunpowder residue was made in the Home Circuit Court during additional submission by the prosecution, which disclosed a number of forensic reports to the defence shortly before Justice Carol Beswick was set to rule on accused killer Patrick Powell's bail application.

Among the reports were also the findings of paint samples taken from the BMW X6 that the accused killer was allegedly driving when the shooting took place on July 1. The findings from paint samples taken from the taxi in which Mais was travelling when it slammed into the luxury SUV, just before he was shot, were also included in the reports.
Those findings were read out by the prosecution and indicated that the paint taken from the point where the taxi -- a Toyota Succeed -- collided with the X6 was consistent with the paint on the body of the luxury vehicle owned by the 50-year-old Powell. Another of the findings showed a match between the paint at a garage and the damaged bumper of the X6, which the prosecution is contending was painted over shortly after the incident.
It was defence counsel Patrick Atkinson who read the report which found that trace level gunpowder residue was found on the back of Mais' right hand.
"Gunpowder is not found on the palm when a gun is fired," Atkinson said, adding that gunpowder residue would be found on the back of the hand of somebody who was firing a gun.
In response, the prosecution said that if a gun was being fired there would be elevated levels of gunpowder residue and not trace levels.
Mais was shot dead in July as he travelled in a taxi in Havendale on his way to a fete at Meadowbrook High School. Powell left the island a day after the incident, but through Atkinson, informed the police when he would return and was arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport.
Justice Beswick will this afternoon rule on the bail application.
