PNP unresponsive to a demand to retract IMF statement

People’s National Party General Secretary Peter Bunting is yet to respond to a demand from Finance Minister Audley Shaw to retract a statement he made that the delay in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reviews could mean the government will run out of money by January.
There has been no statement from Mr. Bunting since Mr. Shaw made the demand on Monday and efforts by our news centre to reach him have been unsuccessful.
Mr. Shaw slammed Mr. Bunting's statement saying it reflected a willful attempt to mislead the people of Jamaica, cause panic and fear among the public sector, as well as de-stabilize the economy by driving loss of confidence among investors.
He reiterated that funds from the IMF are not used in the financing of the budget.
Mr. Shaw says the IMF funds are used only at the Bank of Jamaica for Balance of Payment support.
Mr. Shaw says even without the IMF funds for almost a year, the Net International Reserves remain at a healthy US$2 billion.
The Minister called for the Opposition Leader or the Spokesman on Finance to intervene and ask Mr. Bunting to retract the statement.
In the meantime, information from the Bank of Jamaica shows a further dip in Jamaica's NIR.
Between September and the end of last month the reserves fell by US$48.4 million.
As a result the NIR moved from US$2.08 billion to US$2.03 billion.
Despite the decline, the reserves are still valued at 27 weeks of imports.
