Danville Walker approached to run on the JLP ticket
RJR News has learnt that Danville Walker, the Commissioner of Customs, has been approached to represent the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the next general election.
Mr. Walker has been approached to run on the party's ticket in the Central Manchester constituency.
The current Member of Parliament is the People’s National Party (PNP's) Peter Bunting.
The former JLP councillor for the Mandeville Division, Sally Porteous lost to Mr. Bunting in the 2007 General Election.
It is understood that the JLP is now seeking to have a strong contender to go up against Mr. Bunting and believes Mr. Walker is the ideal candidate.
When contacted, Mr. Walker would neither confirm nor deny the report and Aundre Franklin, the JLP's General Secretary, also declined to comment on the matter but said he had not received an application from Mr. Walker to run on the party's ticket.
Mr. Franklyn added that the JLP expects to complete its list of candidates for the upcoming polls within the next seven days.
Mr. Walker assumed the post of Commissioner of Customs in 2008 after resigning as Director of Elections.
He was forced to step down from the post of Director of Elections after deciding that he would not renounce his United States citizenship.
Mr. Walker was cited in the dual citizenship case brought by the PNP's Abe Dabdoub against the JLP's Daryl Vaz in the West Portland constituency in 2007.
At the time, Mr. Walker faced criticism for declaring that Mr. Vaz, who at the time was a United States citizen, had been duly nominated prior to the election.
The provisions in the Electoral Commission (Interim) Act were the basis for the claims made by Mr. Dabdoub that Mr. Vaz was not qualified to sit in the House of Representatives because he had not been properly nominated.
The provisions of the legislation were similarly applied to Mr. Walker.
But he later explained that he had not been aware of the constitutional provision.
