    The third Thursday in October of each year, such as today, is designated International Credit Union Day. The credit unions in Jamaica were started by the Young Men's Sodality of Holy Trinity (Roman Catholic) Cathedral in 1941 and registered in 1942. The Sodality Credit Union (now defunct) saw to the formation of other credit unions and established the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League in 1942.
    In 1937, Norman Washington Manley was instrumental in getting the United Fruit Company to establish Jamaica Welfare. As the lawyer for the Jamaica Banana Producers Co-operative, the elder Manley was concerned that the rural folk were heading to Kingston for jobs. Black Sigatoka disease killed out the bananas in the early 1930s. A new type of banana needed to be planted.
