George Nooks? He was just here in Toronto. The plot thickens. Be careful that this is not just idle chatter from the empty barrel set.

Gov’t denies rumours of extradition requests for politicians

The government has flatly denied that there are extradition requests pending for local politicians.

Daryl Vaz, Minister with responsibility for Information, on Wednesday morning responded to a story in Wednesday's Jamaica Observer claiming that two politicians are wanted by US authorities.

The report said the two are among a list of persons wanted in the ongoing matter involving convicted racketeer Christopher "Dudus" Coke.

Mr. Vaz emphasised at Wednesday morning's post cabinet press briefing that no agency in the government is in possession of any information in relation to the extradition of politicians.

He attributed the media reports to mere speculation and is calling for restraint on such types of reporting.

                            More extraditions?

2 politicians, entertainer among 5 J’cans said wanted by US Gov’t

                            Wednesday, October 12, 2011

EXTRADITION requests from the American Government for five Jamaicans, among them three prominent faces, are expected to be delivered to local authorities today, a highly placed US Government official has told the Observer.

According to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, two of the wanted men are politicians, one is a veteran entertainer, while the others both conduct regular business at Kingston’s Port Bustamante.
                            COKE… extradited last year

The extradition requests, the official said, are related to the ongoing criminal matter involving reputed drug lord Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, who is awaiting sentencing in a United States court, following his admission of guilt in relation to racketeering in the US and conspiracy to commit assault in aid of racketeering.

Coke faces a maximum 23 years in prison when he returns to the United States Southern District Court of New York for sentencing on December 8.
He has since written to the presiding district judge, Robert P Patterson, begging for leniency.

US authorities regard Coke, 42, as the head of the US-based ‘Shower Posse’, which earned a reputation for brutally killing opponents during the bloody cocaine wars of the 1980s in the US.

Coke waived his right to an extradition hearing and was sent to the US in June last year, following a month-long, islandwide search for him that began after a deadly battle between the security forces and gunmen loyal to him in his former West Kingston stronghold of Tivoli Gardens in May.

A total of 76 people, including two policemen and a soldier, were killed in the three days of violence that rocked the country.

According to the US Government official, the politicians named in the extradition warrants are believed to have assisted Coke in the importation of various items from the United States, some of which may not have been brought in legally.

The Observer was told that US authorities got critical information on certain persons in Jamaica from Coke, although his legal team has maintained consistently that the former fugitive did not squeal

                              Massive gun seizure in Kingston
                              Dec 24

A man has been taken into custody following the seizure of 15 illegal firearms and over one hundred rounds of ammunition, during an operation on Tuesday.

The guns were found in vehicle, which was driven out from the Universal Freight Handlers complex on Marcus Garvey Drive, in Kingston.

The weapons and ammunition were concealed inside three television sets that the vehicle was transporting.

Five more high-powered rifles are now off the streets after a police operation uncovered the deadly weapons at Universal Freight Handlers Warehouse on Marcus Garvey Drive, Kingston, yesterday.

A male who went to pick up the container was also detained and is now being interrogated by the police. He is expected to be charged.

Police personnel attached to Operation Kingfish, the Major Investigation Task Force and other agencies went to the warehouse about 12:00 p.m. yesterday, where they targeted a refrigerator.

Inside the door of the refrigerator the police found two shotguns, an AK-47 assault rifle, a 9mm submachine gun and a .62 calibre rifle equipped with a telescope.

The police have since arrested two persons in connection with more than 10,000 assorted bullets detected at the Universal Freight Handlers Warehouse. A third person is still being sought by investigators probing the matter.

Following the find, precautionary measures have already been taken by the management of some of the warehouses to tighten up on security. At least one warehouse is upgrading security. Another has stopped accepting barrels shipped from the US.

Yesterday, a Gleaner news team toured three prominent warehouses, spoke with the management and observed the processing of the barrels and the existing security system.

                              * At the Universal Freight Handlers Warehouse, JDF soldiers, customs and police had their hands full, effecting 100 per cent search to barrels.

Since the ammo find, managing director of Universal Freight Handlers, Andrew Gallimore, said his company has pumped $200,000 to $250,000 into a sophisticated security system.
Don't be too quick to assume that just because workers are moonlighting for gangs that management (or the fathers of the management team) are moonlighting too.

Well he denied knowledge of extradition requests which could mean that the Observer knows more than he does.
