  • Sources: Damion Crawford to contest east rural St. Andrew se

Well placed Gleaner sources have claimed that former People’s National Party Youth Organisation (PNPYO) president Damion Crawford is to contest the east rural St Andrew parliamentary seat for the PNP, against former Member of Parliament Joan Gordon Webley.

JLP sources said Gordon Webley who is current head of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), would contest the seat for the party.

The Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Joseph Hibbert is the sitting MP. However, JLP sources have said he may not face the electorates in the next general election.

Hibbert has been under investigation for corruption after UK bridge-building firm Mabey and Johnson pleaded guilty in Britain, to offering him kickbacks in exchange for contracts.

Crawford is expected to replace Peter Blake, whose candidacy was under review according to the PNP.

Crawford had resigned as head president of the PNPYO after being overlooked by the party for the North Trelawny seat.

Contacted yesterday, the outspoken politician refused to say if he was heading to the seat.

PNP to decide on candidate for WC St Andrew

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) is getting ready to up the ante, in the constituency of West Central St. Andrew.

The seat has taken on renewed interest, hot on the heels of yesterday's endorsement of incumbent Member of Parliament, Andrew Holness, as front runner for the leadership of the Jamaica Labour Party.

Businessman and Shocking Vibes Executive, Patrick Roberts, is the caretaker candidate for the PNP in the constituency.

It's understood that consultations are scheduled to take place on Tuesday with a former President of the PNP's Youth Organisation, in an effort to convince him to represent the party in the constituency in the next general election.

PNP insiders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, say the party's secretariat is placing emphasis on ratifying the candidacy of a new caretaker.

While it has not been made public, the PNP's Integrity Commission reportedly recommended, some months ago, that the party decline from ratifying Mr. Roberts' candidacy.

It's understood that his current legal woes have been a major source of concern.

Mr. Roberts was charged with breaches of the Firearms Act, following the loss of his licensed firearm.

Addressing the recent annual party conference, PNP General Secretary, Peter Bunting, revealed that the Secretariat was moving to finalise representation for approximately nine seats.

He however declined to name the seats.
