Kartel jailed - In custody as cops probe body found at house

    Saturday, October 01, 2011

CONTROVERSIAL dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel is spending the weekend in jail following his arrest on a drug charge at a hotel in New Kingston yesterday by police who also say they are investigating the discovery of a body at a St Andrew house that he frequents.
According to police sources, the house in Havendale was gutted by fire two weeks ago.

"The entertainer will remain in custody as he is being questioned in connection with a matter, details of which the police cannot reveal at this time," head of the Central Investigation Bureau, Ealan Powell, told the Observer yesterday.

The deejay, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, and three other persons were arrested and charged with possession of ganja.
Following the arrest, the handcuffed deejay was transported to several houses, one of which is in Havendale and which the police believe he visits frequently. The police searched the properties.

Powell said the searches were part of a larger investigation in a case with which they believe Kartel could be connected.

Police said the details of investigations would be revealed early next week.
Attorney Christian Tavares-Finson, who represents the deejay, yesterday said his client was informed of his rights and told to co-operate with the police, who are expected to begin questioning him on Monday.

Meanwhile, in a related development, officials from telecommunications company LIME said they were following the case of the deejay, who now stars on a local reality TV show titled Teacha's Pet, which it sponsors.
The company said it has had discussions with Creative Source Production, producers of the show, regarding reports of charges being laid against the show's central character.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and as more information becomes available, if necessary, we will issue a further statement," the company said.
