      Warmington Calls OCG Report 'Rubbish'
      Published: Thursday | September 29, 20110 Comments
      Edmond Campbell, Senior Staff Reporter

CONTROVERSIAL GOVERNMENT backbencher Everald Warmington has dismissed as "rubbish" the findings of a major investigation by the Office of the Contractor General (OCG) into the award of government contracts to a company he is alleged to have owned.

The Greg Christie-led OCG yesterday sent its findings to the commissioner of police, the director of public prosecutions, the attorney general and the secretary of the Integrity Commission.

Yesterday, when The Gleaner contacted Warmington, he appeared unaware that the report had been submitted by the OCG to various public-sector agencies, as well as Parliament.

"I don't know if a report is sent anywhere, but I am not concerned about any report. Report on what? That is rubbish. He (Christie) always sends something that is pure nonsense," declared the controversial Jamaica Labour Party member of parliament (MP).

Last year when the OCG divulged that it would be conducting an investigation into the award of government contracts to a company in which Warmington was alleged to have owned, the fiery MP went on the offensive using caustic expressions to describe Christie. However, he later apologised.

The 13-month-long probe delved into allegations of impropriety and irregularity in the award of certain contracts by the St Catherine Parish Council to Strathairn Construction Company Limited (SCCL), a company which was alleged to be owned and/or controlled by the South West St Catherine MP.

The OCG's decision to commence the investigation was made public on August 16, 2010, following a preliminary enquiry into certain sworn statements which had been made to the OCG under oath. The statements had implicated Warmington and at least one other senior public official. It was also alleged, among other things, that the majority of the contracts that were awarded by the St Catherine Parish Council were awarded to SCCL.

"a company which was alleged to be owned and/or controlled by the South West St Catherine MP..."

How hard is it to ascertain who owns a company? We think he owns it...or maybe he controls it...or his cousin owns it but he stopped by to have lunch once...
