PM Bruce Golding tables bill to establish a National Building Code

Despite a whirlwind of political developments around him, Prime Minister Bruce Golding brought a bill to Parliament to establish a National Building Code during Tuesday’s sitting of the House of Representatives.

The proposed legislation is to repeal The Kingston and St. Andrew Building Act of 1883 and Parish Councils Building Act of 1908, which now provide the rules governing buildings in Jamaica.
The delay in enacting a new National Building Code has been criticised by local civil engineers who contend that the lack of crucial laws could put the lives of many at risk if the country is hit by a major earthquake.
"I beg to give notice that at the next sitting of the House, I will move to introduce for the first time, a bill entitled An Act to repeal to the Kingston and St. Andrew Building Act and (the) Parish Councils Building Act and make new provisions for the regulation of building industry to facilitate the adoption and efficient application of national building standards to be called the National Building Code of Jamaica for ensuring safety in the building environment, enhancing amenities and promoting sustainable development and for connected matters," Mr. Golding said.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
