A male gold medallist from the recent World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, was one of 21 motorists who had their vehicles seized on the weekend as the police and the Island Traffic Authority started a clampdown on vehicles sporting illegal high-definition lights.

The sprinter was also ticketed for driving a motor vehicle without a current certificate of fitness.

"We will not be releasing the name of the athlete, but I can tell you that the vehicle was seized, the plates removed and the person ticketed," head of the Police Traffic Division, Senior Super-intendent Radcliffe Lewis, told The Gleaner.

According to Lewis, other persons of influence in the society also had their vehicles seized during the weekend action across the Corporate Area.

Lewis said the decision to target persons driving around with the bright blue or yellow lights was sparked by frequent complaints by motorists.
"Between 10 p.m and 5 a.m starting last Friday, the police were on the roads looking for those motorists driving around with the bright blue and yellow lights instead of the white lights dictated by law," Lewis told The Gleaner.

"We removed plates from 21 vehicles and the drivers were ticketed for the offence. A number of the drivers were also ticketed for speeding on the just-completed stretch of road from Dunrobin Avenue to Washington Boulevard," added Lewis.

He said, starting tonight, the police will be back on the lookout for vehicles with bright lights which cause visual difficulties for some motorists, forcing them to slow down or sometimes stop.

"We will stagger the hours so that persons cannot anticipate the police, but we are going to be out there," said Lewis.

I understand we don't even have a law against having your headlights on high beam. And anyone who drives in Jamaica knows police vehicles are the worst offenders!
