Bruce Golding’s decision remains
It appears Prime Minister Bruce Golding’s decision to step down is final, according to information minister, Daryl Vaz who was speaking on radio this afternoon.
A statement from the Jamaica Labour Party’s chairman, Mike Henry this afternoon said that the Central Executive had unanimously voted to reject Mr Golding’s resignation. But Mr Vaz said the party leader’s decision remained unchanged.
Mr Golding had conveyed his decision to step down during a quarterly meeting of the JLP’s Central Executive at the party’s Belmont Road headquarters today.
The prime minister said he had planned to lead the party into a second term of government and demit office within two years thereafter. However, in a statement released this afternoon, he said the challenges of the last four years have taken their toll and it was appropriate for him to make way for new leadership to continue the programmes of economic recovery and transformation, while mobilizing the party for victory in the next general elections.
Mr Golding said he would also step aside as prime minister when a new leader of the party is elected.
Political commentator, Kevin Obrien Chang says if the JLP leader withdraws his decision, it may further damage his credibility and the JLP’s reputation.
University of the West Indies lecturer, Richard Crawford says Mr Golding’s decision to step down was inevitable, while human Rights lobbyist Yvonne McCalla Sobers has described his decision to step down as a relief.
She says Mr Golding’s credibility had become an albatross around the neck of the JLP, particularly his involvement in the Dudus/Manatt affair.Last edited by Karl; September 25, 2011, 09:24 PM.Comment
