    Jones Town man is new police chief of Florida city

    FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida — A popular Jamaican from Jones Town, Kingston was sworn in yesterday as the new chief of police of the City of Lauderhill, Florida, becoming only the second black person to hold the position.

    Andrew Smalling, who left Jamaica with his parents, Albert and Doreen Smalling, at age eight, had already made history when he became the first black person to be appointed chief of police of adjoining Lauderdale Lakes, near Fort Lauderdale, 11 years ago.


    Yesterday Smalling, immediately after taking the oath of office, established the basis on which he would lead his 140-strong police force in protecting the 70,000 residents of Lauderhill City, saying he would rely on the greatest protector of them all.
