Many of the rich people in France wrote a signed letter that they were willing to pay more to get France out of the debt situation since they have benefitted from the system.. The government in then placed a 3% further tax on their income until about 2014 with the sole purpose of using that money to pay down the debt.

I can't see it happening in the US any time soon though. There just are not the votes in Congress to pass anything close to that.

If Buffet can get a few dozen high profile people to speak up it would start the process of applying pressure and making it a major issue in the election next year. That would be a start.
