Go For It! Paulwell Backs Tufton's Plan To Target ICT Sector To Create New Jobs
    Published: Saturday | August 6, 20112 Comments
    Arthur Hall, Senior Gleaner Reporter

FORMER TECHNOLOGY minister Phillip Paulwell has applauded the government for its decision to target the information, communication and technology (ICT) sector to speedily create thousands of jobs.

But Paulwell, the Opposition spokesman on technology, has lamented the fact that the Bruce Golding administration is only now looking at this area, almost four years after it defeated the People's National Party and formed the government.

Paulwell has also rejected the claim that his push to create jobs in this sector some 11 years ago was an expensive failure.

"When I left office we had created 14,000 jobs in call centres, plus thousands more in support areas of telecommunications," Paulwell told The Gleaner yesterday.

"Any dispassionate assessment will see that there was success. We brought in US$100 million in cellular licences and J$6 billion from the Universal Access Fund," Paulwell added.

He also pointed to the hundreds of Jamaicans who were trained in ICT and the success of businesses such as the e-Services Group which was headed by Patrick Casserly who is now the point man on the push by the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce to create up to 30,000 ICT jobs in the next two to three years.

If yuh listen to some people, nothing positive happened in those 18 years.

I missed some of those 18 years, living in America, but in the meantime, my peers in Jamaica bought a house, or two, a car, or two, not to mention cellphones, opened businesses, made money (some failed) and generally thought things were at the very least, ok.

All of a sudden, those were the worst days of our lives!

You really thought those were good years?

Look what happened in our peer countries in the meantime. Not everything was bad of course, there there is no getting around the huge underperformance.

I lamented the horrific murder rates and the struggling growth rates (among other things) like the next person, but certainly it wasn't nearly as bad as some people would like us to believe.

And I like how all of a sudden I thought those years were "good"!

        Nice try, Willi!

Telecom under Paulwell was a winner. IT under Paulwell was a loser. He promised 40,000 jobs in something like 4 years and delivered 13,000 in his tenure. He lost a big portion of 400 million US dollar by choosind dubious characters and giving them government backing. They in tern took the money and run.

Paulwell can try re-writie history but that is the fact. It may look good in the miror but Paulwell was on reckless minister with some good ideas.

          • Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.

But where was the responsible opposition at the time? Busy making money too? Too busy to realise that we would be paying for it later? Too busy fighting, allowing the PNP to be in power for 18 years?!?!?

You really have no clue what happened in Jamaica during the PNP's run and how Paulwell flushed Jamaica's money down the drain and members of his team had to make all sorts of excuses for him.

Luckily during the PNPs run your favourite media house wasn't too concerned with exposing the govt. Otherwise we would have heard the big scandal of JPS having to take a away a vehicle from an MP that had no right to have it in the first place, some shady NCB transactions, shady characters on the govt's payroll by paying through the use of dead people's names.

There was a global boom going on and Jamaica didn't benefit. In 20 years one would hope that there are better cars and cel phones coming to the market. Technological advancements have reached most countries during that time. When James Robertson and Paulwell get together, you should see how happy they are. There is a reason for that....
