<SPAN class=news_body>A statement from Mr. Giscombe's lawyer Ernest Smith Saturday afternoon said the Mayor has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm, assault at common-law and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The charges allegedly arose from an incident during which Mr. Giscombe tried to prevent a female employee from being attacked by her estranged husband.

The case is set for mention in the Brown's Town Resident Magistrates Court next Wednesday.

Mr. Smith says Mr. Giscombe is innocent of the charges.

He says in keeping with the policy of the Jamaica Labour Party, Mr. Giscombe has decided to take a leave of absence from the Chairmanship of the Parish Council until the cases is disposed of.

In the interim, Deputy Mayor Sydney Stewart will act as Mayor and Chairman of the St. Ann Parish Council.
