Gov’t says the economy is on the recovery, 14,000 jobs created

The Government is pointing to the creation of 14,000 jobs in the last fiscal quarter as part of its prudent management which has led to economic recovery.
Daryl Vaz, the Minister with responsibility for Information, says the country has done well in sustaining itself through the global recession.
"The indicators have to be right and they have to be sustained in order for the country to grow and once the country grows, then jobs will be created. But I think we have done extremely well as a country in comparison with several other countries," Mr. Vaz said at Wednesday's [July 13] Post Cabinet press briefing.
The minister added that job losses in the bauxite sector were still affecting families, but that the economy was on the way to better health and all Jamaicans will benefit from this.
Mr. Vaz's comments come on the heels of those made by Prime Minister Bruce Golding in recent weeks that the country is now on sound economic footing, due to among other things, a fall in interest rates and stability of the inflation rate.
Mr. Golding had also said that Jamaica should emerge from its economic recession at the end of March.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
